Nantes: a city of many rivers and close to the sea
Nantes is a city on the West Coast of France, just 30 miles from the coast. With just under 1 million inhabitants, it is a city of significant size, and so offers all the benefits of a larger city - yet it is also near enough to the coast for day trips to the sea if you are visiting for your holidays.
The name derives from its roots as a town founded by the Namnetes tribe of Gaul around 70 BC. The area was conquered by the Romans soon afterwards. It now has a nickname of “Venice of the West”, due to its position on three rivers: the Loire, the Sevre, and the Erdre.

Nantes: a castle at the centre, though with many green spaces
There are a range of different attractions to enjoy during your stay in Nantes. You can find a good deal of information about Nantes and its history at the Musée d'histoire de Nantes, which resides within the historic Château des ducs de Bretagne, on the river Loire. This castle has a history going back to the 13th century. The Musée Jules Verne contains information on the writer and tells of the influences on his work - and there is a nearby planetarium too. There are a range of other museums with subjects as various as sewing machines, firefighters and the navy: as well as art galleries to enjoy. You can browse the shops while admiring the architecture of Passage Pommeraye, a shopping mall that was built in the mid-19th century on three floors.
The Tour Bretagne is a 37 story office block that has an observation level on which visitors can view a 360 degrees view of the city. The most popular destination is the Jardin des Plantes, a botanical garden with thousands of different plant species, glasshouses and an orangery.
There are a number of special events and festivals throughout the year. For example, Utopiales is for science fiction fans, and La Folle Journee is the largest classical music festival in France.
There are a number of local delicacies, including Muscadet wine, white butter and the local galettes, which is a thicker, more savoury pancake. You can gain entrance into a range of the top attractions in the city, together with access to public transport, in one price, by buying a 'Nantes Pass'.
