Florence is a city with a unique connection to history and art
Florence is the main city in the Italian region of Tuscany, and though there are just over one million inhabitants in its wider urban area, it attracts millions of tourists every year for their holidays. Florence has a truly fascinating history, as it was the cultural centre of the Renaissance, a movement that transformed intellectual and artistic ideas during the 14th to the 16th centuries. Florence was also the centre of power of the Medici family, whose influence and power stretched across several countries, with connections to the Vatican. The city was the location of the 'Bonfire of the Vanities' when a Dominican priest burned art, books and other items thought to be immoral.
